gulin, aka. huangulin, used to be called huanggonglin (i.e., huang's lodge). huang shigong, a teacher of zhang liang (a great strategist in the western han dynasty), spent his later years in gulin street where he dedicated himself to curing local patients. a temple erected by later generations in honor of him was named huanggonglin temple. that's how this street got its current name.
gulin is crisscrossed by water networks, and renowned for straw mats at home and abroad. built along the river, the old street comprises north and south sections. among over 100 shops on the old street, 40 or 50 were engaged in the straw mat business.
today, there are only remnants of those old shops, while the ancient street is still there. ancient architecture such as huanggonglin temple, wugang bridge, nine lions bridge and central street opera pavilion, are quietly guarding the riverside, watching people pass by. these buildings showcase local culture heritage and the hustle and bustle that city dwellers rarely feel.
