zhongshan road is to ningbo, what chang'an avenue is to beijing. built in the tang dynasty (618-907 a.d.), it was previously called "the main street". in 1946, to honor dr. sun yat-sen (1866-1925), it was renamed "zhongshan road". during the early stage of reform and opening-up, the road witnessed the opening of the first large-scale retail center, hualian shopping mall, and later, in the 1990s, the building of the tallest skyscraper at that time in zhejiang, ningbo cadtic building.
later, sunshine plaza, tianyi square, and sakura park were constructed one after another along the road. today, the road has extended much farther from its original 2 kilometers prospering with the city. recently, hualian shopping mall was shut down. but there remains – on either side of the road – tianning pagoda, yongfeng warehouse site, and fan's mansion, along with many other cultural relics and heritage sites. the combination of ancient and modern construction is why the road is crowned as "the best street in east zhejiang". nearby, drum tower pedestrian street and heyi avenue epitomize an integration of fashion and tradition. with a rich history and profound civilization, zhongshan road embodies the "city parlor" of ningbo.
