ningbo fun facts 101·legendary streets episode 9 jiangxia street -k8凯发官网
“east or west, ningbo jiangxia is the best.”
“jiangxia”, the name of the street, allegedly originated in the song dynasty (960 - 1679 a.d.). on the outskirts of city, by the fenghua river, there was a temple called “jiangxia” (江下), meaning “at the lower reach of the river”. it was said to be built by zhao jingyu (1059-1129 a.d.), an official from the siming shipyard. in ningbo dialect, “下” (below) is a homophone of “厦” (mansion), hence the new name of “江厦寺” came into being. accordingly, the street in its front was named jiangxia street.
the original jiangxia street was composed of tanghang street (street of sugar stores), shuang street (dual street), qianhang street (street of draft banks), and banbian street (one-way street). it was the city’s business hub for foreign trading and cargo distribution, where stores and draft banks flourished. although the street is not long, it connects haishu district, jiangbei district, and former jiangdong district (now part of yinzhou district). sitting at the intersection of the bustling dongmenkou, and the peaceful jiangxia park, the street embodies a balance of dynamism and serenity.
